24 hours in Moscow
Huge, messy, bristling with social and architectural contrasts and perpetually under construction. At first glance, Moscow might seeem rather unfriendly. But soon you’ll realize that it’s right here that lies the excitement- in the unexpectedness of an ever-changing city whose ancient history seems to be everywhere you look.
That’s why – not before having looked up to the colored “flames” of St Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square, taken a few pictures of the Kremlin and admired the works of Chagall and Kandinsky in the world’s largest museum of Russian art– the best that you can do is plunging into the life of the city and exploring some of the places that its inhabitants love best.
Here are a few ideas on how to spend one day like a real Moscovite.
BREAKFAST
Volkonsky Club
Baguettes, éclairs, macarons … just like a parisian neighborhood bakery/café.
RELAX
Sandunovskiy Russian Baths
Don’t let the fading grandeur of these 19th century baths scare you – this is the best place in tow for trying the traditional steam rooms, massages and… twig whippings.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGHTS
Shukhov Tower
This 160m high hyperbolic tower (see photo above) dates back to 1922 and has been an inspiration for Gaudì, Le Corbusier and Calatrava. You can’t help noticing it, especially at night when it lights up.
LUNCH
Gallery Art Café
Dark furniture, photo exhibitions on the walls and italian cuisine. If you’re curious to see where the young fashion and showbiz jet set gathers, just drop by for lunch.
DINNER
Sky Lounge
Eat International cuisine on the top of the Academy of Science building, with a breathtaking 360-degree view on the city. The high price is worth the sight.
AFTER DINNER
Soho Rooms
A hip venue including restaurant, bar, disco and pool terrace. Everything is slightly overstated here, from the decor to the prices. But, come on, after all this is the “it” night spot in Moscow, so just relax and take a look at what’s happening on the nightfloor.
