50 years of rock
With a half-century-long career in the music business, they are certainly the longest-lived rock band in the world. We’re talking about the Rolling Stones, who are ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
It’s been a long time since their first gig back in 1962, and yet the hugely successful Jagger/Richards partnership seems ready to get back to work – rumour has it that a tour is planned for 2013.
One thing’s for sure: when they got the lucky chance to deputize for Alexis Korner at London’s Marquee Club on July 12, 1962, Jagger and Richards – who were not even 20 at the time – did not expect such an outcome.
All they wanted to do was play some good blues, be a serius blues band – maybe equal their idols Muddy Waters e Robert Johnson; the prospect to write songs was still far-off. Yet, instant success flung them into the empyrean of rock stardom.Apart from their broad sales figures, what still strikes most about the Stones is their influence on the world of rock music, and their role in debunking the myth according to which rock music is for young people exclusively.
If you happened to see Mick Jagger dancing on stage or Keith Richards performing his signature grin while playing his Gibson in recent times, then you must have noticed that these guys still know how to have fun and entertain in spite of their age.
To celebrate the anniversary, a lot of events are on their way. Rolling Stones fans will get the chance to see Mick Jagger hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live and to visit a huge photo exhibition in New York City.
As for the most bizarre form of celebration, the Rolling Stones are to be commemorated in Japan with the release of a new line of alcoholic drinks. And Richards also mentioned that the band will begin rehearsing for a studio session…
