A Museum of Things
Toothpaste tubes, hand modified Russian watches, personal possessions found in the Pacific, paper works found in copying machines… What might sound like an incoherent and random list is actually a small and eye-opening catalogue of human existence.
Which is exactly what the unusual collection at Museum, a brand new gallery in new York City, is all about: objects, those small, forgotten and often overlooked treasures that have a lot to say about society, the world and its history.
Conceived by brothers Benny and Josh Safdie with Alex Kalman, Museum is an 80-square-foot space located in what was once a freight elevator in the back alley of a former Broadway paper warehouse.Inside, every single object, be it a bizzare or a very common one, is displayed with all the dignity of an art masterpiece and accompanied by the story of its origin and how it ended up in the Museum.
From the Permanent Collection, every few months the curators select and rotate specific collections of objects, so you can check the current exhibitions on their website.
Museum is open by appointment only and it’s free of charge.
The collection is open to public submission, however, only the most uniquely sincere and awe-inspiring objects or collections will withstand the vetting process.
