Away from the crowd
Rivers of beer, barrel-shaped hats, hordes of tourists wearing traditional costumes invading the city center… Every year for three weeks, Munich is literally held hostage by Oktoberfest – or “Wiesn”, as the locals call it.
For a couple of days, the whole business might event intrigue you and charm the folklorist in you. But on the third day, expect a sudden allergy to German beer and all that concerns it. Time to run away from the madding crowd… Here’s how to escape Oktoberfest in four easy moves.
12 a.m: Jazzy Brunch
Replace bratwurts with cajun, beer with Chardonnay and the brass band with a New Orleans jazz quartett. Welcome to Big Easy.
2 p.m: Gorge Yourself on Pop Art
Walk through Brandhorst Museum and take a look the wold’s greatest collection of works by Andy Warhol, but don’t forget Beuys, Baselitz, Hirst, Basquiat and the others. Prosit!
4 p.m: Time for Tea
What about sipping your tea in an authentic Japanese tea house? At Japanesisches Teehaus, hidden inside luxuriant Englischer Garten, the tea ceremony takes place according to Kyoto’s Urasenke school.
8 p.m: würstel-free dinner
Here’s a restaurant where even the most inveterate meat eaters might be converted to vegetarianism. Prinz Myshkin is the ideal place to find shelter from the ever-prevailing pork meat. Your palate will find the food as romantic as the restaurant’s name, inspired by Dostoevsky.
