Bedknobs and broomsticks
One of the best ways to understand a city is wandering through its markets with no definite aim. Should you find yourself in Berlin, all you need to do is ask some local about the best Flohmärkte – the flea markets.
Chances are you’ll find a good bargain – some old coins and DDR memorabilia, or maybe a rare book, a record you’ve been looking for since forever or some bargain vintage clothing. To start with, here are a few tips.
Moritzplatz, Kreuzberg
The prices are low but it will probably take you quite a lot of time to locate anything interesting in this chaotic market selling second-hand clothing, books, records and more. Good luck!
Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Arkonaplatz, Mitte
The stalls of this rather trendy market sell clothing, furniture, house accessories and general collectibles. And if you need to take a relaxing break, the cafés all around the square are a great option.
Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Straße des 17. Juni, Charlottenburg
Berlin’s most famous flea market is located near Zoo Station and it has two sections – one selling antiques, arts and handicrafts, and the other selling music, clothes and other things.
Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Boxhagener Platz, Friedrichshain
A sort of do-it-yourself market started by a group of locals that wanted to get rid of the items they no longer needed. You can always bump into something peculiar or find some young “gate-crasher” selling original creations
Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
