Going vintage
Wearing a dress, a hat or an accessory from the Thirties is not just a tribute to vanity or fashion. It’s like wearing a piece of history – like being allowed to do what every museum in the world forbids you to do: touching an archaeological find, the vestige of an era.
Which probably accounts for the undying success of vintage style, daring to go further and further into the past to the point of crossing the border between fashion and archaeology.
If what you’re looking for is not just a second-hand item but an authentic gem saved from time, here’s a little guide to some of the worlds’ most interesting vintage shops.
Cavalli e nastri, Milano
A tiny shop along historic via Brera selling some very precious rarities. Clothes and jewels date back from the late 1800s to the Seventies.
Palette, London
Collectable designer vintage and avant-garde labels are the main ingredients of this Islington favourite. From the 20s to the 90s.
Falbalas, Paris
Hidden in the flea market of Saint-Ouen, Falbalas sells some very precious items (from the 18th century to 1970, with a strong accent on the 1900 -1950 period) but you can also find some good bargains.
Bobby from Boston, Boston
Loved by fashion and costume designers, Bobby Garnett’s shop is an institution. Great atmosphere and unique items. The old hatboxes piled on the shelves will drive you crazy (see picture above).
Haight & Ashbury, Tokyo
In Shimokitazawa, Tokyo’s Williamsburg, this place crammed with rarities has been fulfilling the desires of vintage lovers for 25 years. Inui, the owner, travels all around the world hunting for 1950s dresses, linen from the 1800s and much more.
