Hospitality 2.0
It is a sort of cliché, and yet, like all clichés, it holds some truth: the best way to discover a city is to hang around with locals, staying away from the most touristy areas and maybe booking an apartment instead of a hotel.
Which is basically the easy and brilliant formula behind Plus One Berlin, the brainchild of 29-year-old enterpreneur Clare Freeman.
What about the main ingredients? First of all, a cosy Seventies apartment in Berlin’s up-and-coming Kreuzkölln neighborhood, freshly refurbished using a combination of new and salvaged materials.Secondly, a nightly rate of EUR 120, which includes the opportunity to choose among 28 locals with different nationalities, professions and interests that you can connect with either for advice or for an authentic view of the city.
Plus One can host up to 3 guests, and you can manage your reservation online through their website. In the next few years, Clare is hoping to expand this informal and non-touristy hospitality concept to other apartments in Berlin and maybe in other European cities.
For the moment, one thing’s for sure: you can leave your guidebook and maps at home.
