Into the wild
Timber for heating, paper for writing and land for agriculture. These apparently innocent human needs have become some of the major threats to forests and wildlife, contributing to habitat destruction, water pollution and displacement of indigenous peoples.
That’s what exactly what the International Year Of The Forests, falling in 2011, is about: breaking the link between human needs and these negative impacts and learning to manage the forests while protecting them.
On this occasion, the WWF has launched a great awakening campaign that will hopefully help trigger new thinking and innovative solutions, asking decision makers in government and business to take a hard look at one of the biggest challenges of our time.
To understand the spirit of it all, just watch this stunning video released by WWF UK and telling in less than two minutes a 5,000 years-long story to stress the importance of saving these amazing ecosystems for the generations to come.
The guys at WWF UK have also planned a Big Forest Picnic on Saturday August 20, to; if you happen to be in England, just check out the location list to find your nearest one.
If not, you could always hold your own local picnic, bring your friends and help celebrate forests around the world.
