Kobo conquers Japan
Here we are: Japanese giant Rakuten, the world’s third largest e-commerce network, has just launched a new e-reader right before the coming of American counterpart Kindle to the Far Eastern markets.
The device has been procuced by Kobo – an electronics company acquired by Rakuten in January - and it boasts high performances – black and white anti-glare e-ink screen, small format (it’s as large as the palm of your hand, incredibly light and thin).
Specially designed for yhe Japanese market, it has no problems in decoding both ideograms and the latest Epub formats. Rakuten has made agreements in order to have more than 50.000 popular e-books already available at the online bookstore. The launch of Kobo Touch, announced by the e-commerce network’s president Hiroshi Mikatani, will take place on July 19th. The list price is 99$, and it will be available either online or in major electronic shops.
Ever since pre-orders opened a couple of weeks ago, Kobo Touch has been the most wanted article among Rakuten online store’s 100.000.000 products.
“Bringing Kobo Touch, the world’s best e-reader, to the Japanese market, and pairing with the country’s best e-commerce network will give customers the best possible reading experience”, says Mikatani immodestly. And so, although the release of Amazon Kindle in Japan is planned for the end of the year, for the moment Kobo Touch is the talk of the town.
