Making your custom IBook
An interactive iBook complete with images, sounds and videos. That’s what all Apple users with a Mac will be able to do with the brand new (and free) iBooks Author App.
With this fresh product, Apple launches its new and revolutionary offensive in the ebook standards war.
The aim is quite clear: attracting professional content creators to the iBooks platform by offering them a set of pre-arranged but stylish templates that are extremely easy to use.
As for the possible fields of application, just think of so-called “vanity press”. Everyone will be able to create his/her custom iBook – be it a history essay, a cookbook or a photography book. Yet, Apple seems to staking everything on school and education.
While the 2.0 version of iBooks introduced a huge number of textbook-related features (interactive diagrams, 3D objects, finger highlighters, Study Cards…) to try and replace traditional paper schoolbooks, iBooks Author might even allow teachers and professors to create tailor-made textbooks for their students!
Nevertheless, it’s probably still to early to proclaim that, in the next future, all students will go to school with an iPad instead of their usual rucksack.
What you can do instead is download iBooks Author and see how it works – if you’re already familiar with Keynote you’ll find yorself perfectly at ease.
