Minimalist landscapes
Being able to look at familiar objects with new eyes is not something within everybody’s reach. It takes talent, powers of observation and the ability to see the potential of what’s just under our nose.
Which is exactly what Gavin Dunbar does with his camera. Gavin’s images portray landscapes – well, mostly seascapes -Â devoid of the human presence and populated by simple, isolated objects: rocks, reef, lighthouses, trunks, wooden posts.
Captured by the lens with high-contrast black and white patterns and a very simple and geometric frame, the subjects stand out against a soft, blurry background and seem to be floating in space.
The result is a series of dream-like, soothing and almost supernatural images. A set of minimalist landscapes with a “Nordic” flavour to them that will have you considering the opportunity to throw a fresh look at your everyday reality.
Based in Edinburgh, Gavin Dunbar calls himself an amateur photographer.
Yet, already at a first glance, his photographs seem to have much more to say than those of quite a few so-called pros.
