Pocket-size cinema
A story to tell and a cell phone. This year, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, in collaboration with Nokia, issued an unusual challenge to young filmmakers: writing a short movie to be shot with the sole help of a mobile. More precisely, with a Nokia N8.
The result is a great marketing operation as well as a significant message to the great movie productions, considering the high quality of the ideas and the images and the little money invested.
The eight pocket-size movies got a big screen premiere at the Festival on the occasion of the Nokia Shorts Competition event, and can currently be watched on Vimeo.
Starting from the winner, Split Screen: A Love Story by JW Griffith, the minimalist story of a love encounter accross three cities – Paris, New York and London – entirely shot with the split-screen technique.
The screen is divided in two parts, each of them showing the flow of time from the point of view of one of the protagonists with a surprising image continuity.
