Small victories
A meat-free burger, please! This might seem like an odd request, but in fact it’s the only option for a vegetarian entering a classic fast-food restaurant on the spur of a sudden peckish feeling.
Yet, luckily, the classic fast-food concept has undergone a certain evolution, and today even the strictest of vegans can allow themselves a quick and carefree snack and order some take-away food without having to check on every single ingredient.
Parc, Milan
Free wifi connection, newspapers, microfiltered water and kukicha tea for everybody, a doggie water bowl and a bike pump available for cycling customers. These are some of the services offered by this vegan deli in Milan (Viale Lazio 25, see picture above), promoting the idea of sharing as a lifestyle. Their rich and tempting menu changes according to the available ingredients.
From the menu: Vegansacher, Kamut Lasagna
I Lovegetarian, Milan
Organic fresh ingredients, vegetarian food (with vegan options) and gourmet recipes. This meat-free luncheonette chain has hardly anything of a classic fast-food. For the moment, they have two restaurants in Milan, also offering take away and catering service.
From the menu: Seitan Stew with Radicchio and Porcini Mushrooms
Vitaminas 24, Rome
A tiny place in the Pigneto district (via Macerata 24/a) serving squashes, juices, veloutés, wraps and salads. All ingredients are organic and zero-mile (except for tropical fruits). The bread comes from a nearby organic bakery.Â
De Vegetarische Slager, The Netherlands
Literally, “the vegetarian butcher”. Offering fake chicken, fake gyros, fake sausages and much more, this quite unique Dutch fast-food restaurant is quickly spreading throughout the Netherlands. Their “fake” meat looks exactly like real meat, and even tastes very similar. Apparently, Ferran Adria in person tasted their chicken and couldn’t believe it was made from vegetable matter!
Maoz, USA ed Europa
Replacing meat with falafel – those delicious Middele Eastern deep-fried balls made from ground chickpeas – is the key to the huge success of this veggie fast food. Born in Amsterdam back in 1991, Maoz specializes in falafel and other vegetarian dishes, including a great variety of salads, and it’s openly engaged in spreading the vegetarian lifestyle worldwide. Franchises are located in the France, Spain, U.K. and in the US.
