So British!
Is there anything more British than cricket? London, St John’s Wood. In the heart of this neighborhood hosting some of the most expensive properties in the world, cricket has been a major feature ever since the beginning of the 19th century, when the “Home of Cricket”, Lord’s, was built.
Can you imagine how many gentelmen have been gathering around this huge field during the last two centuries?
But let’s leave the whites and wickets aside and talk about the food.
For there’s no contraindication whatsoever to eating and drinking during those endless and sometimes slow cricket matches, alternating between a bite and a moderate expression of enthusiasm.
Lord’s Tavern is a newly renovated gastropub right beside the field, where the old times atmosphere has been recreated via custom wallpapers, wood paneling and old posters.
Steve Smith’s cuisine is also deeply British, from the local & seasonal ingredients – i.e. cheddar cheese from Somerset or smoked fish from Gloucestershire – to the recipes and techniques.
According to British undestatement, though, nothing appears too showy, so that you can gorge yourself on good old fish&chips – but with very properly battered haddock and triple-cooked chips – and top it all off with a traditional nursery pudding. Without losing sight of the game, of course…
