Spring Exhibitions
ROME: ART AND LITERATURE
A great opportunity to see some of the most renowned works by one of the great Masters of Italian art, Tintoretto, born in Venice in 1519.
The monographic exhibition focuses on the main themes of Tintoretto’s art – religion, myth and portrait – with around 40 paintings commented by writer Melania Mazzucco, who wrote a novel based on the artist’s biography. The works on display come from the world’s most important museums and galleries.
Tintoretto alle Scuderie del Quirinale – through June 10
PARIS: ANIMAL BEAUTY
The Grand Palais in Paris is hosting an exhibition devoted to the representation of animals by famous artists – Leonardo Da Vinci, Bruegel, Rembrandt, Gericault, Giacometti, Koons… – from the Renaissance until today. Artists have been depicting animals ever since ancient times; yet, it was in the Sixteenth century, after the Discovery of America, that they took a special interest in portraying the unknow breeds from the New World, sometimes even making up imaginary species in the so-called bestiaries, authentic treatises on zoology.
“Beautè animale” Grand Palais, Paris – through July 16
VIENNA: FROM THE SKETCH TO THE PAINTING
Klimt’s most beautiful drawings and sketches, mostly coming from Abertina Museum‘s permanent collection, have been collected in order to stress the importance that the artist ascribed to the birth of each work, as well as the freedom of expression he found in the act of sketching. While a painting is meant to be seen by many, a drawing is more like a private matter. Klimt loved to depict two-dimensional soft and curvy feminine figures, and drawings suited his style just perfectly.
“Gustav Klimt – Die Zeichnungen” Albertina, Vienna, fino al 10 giugno
AMSTERDAM: SYMBOLIST LANDSCAPES
Between the end of the Nineteenth century and the beginning of the Twentieth century, when strong industrialization began, Symbolists paid great attention to the influence of modernity on the world; while working conditions were getting worse and nature suffered, in their paintings they evoked dreams, visions and desires that seemed to be lost in the real world. Van Gogh himself was particularly attentive to the effects of industrialization, and took an interest in the life conditions of miners. The first exhibition devoted to Symbolist lanscape painting in Europe includes 70 masterpieces by famous artists such as Kandinsky, Mondrian and Van Gogh, painted between 1880 and 1910 circa.
“Dreams of nature – Symbolisme van Van Gogh tot Kandinsky” Van Gogh Museum – through June 17
NEW YORK: THE MANY FACES OF CINDY
Cindy Sherman, of course. Author of one of the world’s most expensive photograph ever purchased ($3.3 million…), she’s the protagonist of a huge spring exhibition at MoMa going over her whole career, including Untitled Film Stills, a very famous picture series from the Seventies: 69 small format black-and-white pictures that feature the artist in stereotypical female roles inspired by 1950s and 1960s Hollywood, film noir, and European art-house films.
“Cindy Sherman” The Museum of Modern Art, New York – through June 11
