The sci-fi revival
While Star Wars by George Lucas hits the theatres once again in its brand new 3D version, in Hollywood the sequel to the first Star Trek movie by J.J. Abrams is being filmed. In the meantime, rumors are spreading that a new tv series based on the Enterprise space voyages will soon be released…
The Star Wars machine nevers seems to stop: after the comeback of the original trilogy some ten years ago, soon followed by the “prequel trilogy”, in the latest weeks the first episode of the new trilogy, The Phantom Menace, has been hitting the theatres again after a sparkling 3D restyling.
The fact that George Lucas had been having this in mind for quite a long time is no mystery: ever since 2005, the father of Star Wars has been thinking of producing a new 3D version. Yet, the real mainspring was the huge success of Avatar.
Phantom Menace – the first chapter of the saga, although probably not the most loved by fans – should be followed by the 3D launch of the other two episodes, with a one-year interval between each other.
And good news are coming even for those who prefer the space travels of Enterprise to the adventures of Jedi knights.
Last January, the filming of the first Star Trek Movie’s sequel finally started: after the 2009 reboot movie, J.J. Abrams (Lost, Fringe, Super 8) was confirmed as the film’s director.
This time, though, Lost‘s co-creator Demon Lindelof will be joining the writing team; besides, according to some unconfirmed reports, the cast might feature Benedict Cumberbatch, the protagonist of BBC’s Sherlock Holmes, starring as a villain.
But there’s more to look forward to for die hard Star Trek fans: rumors have it that a brand new TV series directed by X-Men‘s Bryan Singer might soon be released.
After “barely” seven years from the last Star Trek TV series (Enterprise), the many petitions and fanfictions finally seem to have hit home.
