This is England
Tales of ordinary madness along the streets of England. But this is not London, this is the Midlands, a part of the countrly that is only rarely featured in movies. That’s the world of Shane Meadows and the backdrop for his films, that lately (and with unaccountable delay) appeared in the Italian theaters.
In Britain, Shane Meadows is the rising star of socially engaged cinema – a genre previously explored by fellow-countrymen directors Ken Loach and Mike Leigh – yet with a tad more irony and lightness.
And most of all with a background as a self-taught director of low-budget films in the indipendent movie scene – although his works are currently broadcasted by BBC, which recently produced a TV series taken fromhis most successful movie.
Shane is a cinematic chronicler of contemporary British working-class culture. His movies tell the stories of young and adult people, from local gangs and subcultures to families. There are no “good” and “bad” characters, only complex and deeply human characters.
If you’re an Eighties nostalgic, do not miss This is England 86, the TV series taken from Shane Meadows’ 2006 hit movie This is England
