Fresh cheese and cucumbers, clotted buffalo milk cream or a traditional continental buffet? Waking up in Istanbul offers some great opportunities to try a wide range of different things for breakfast – a diversity reflecting the many faces of a city suspended between East and West.
Whether you happen to be among the winding alleys of Eminönü or on the top of a terrace overlooking the Bosphorus – or even along the busy streets of Beyoğlu – if you go for a traditional Turkish breakfast you’ll be served a profusion of cheese, olives, eggs, fresh vegetables, jam and honey.
Of course, Turkish coffee comes last, thick and spiced – kahvalti, the Turkish world for “breakfast”, actually means “before coffee”.
Van Kahvaltı Evi
One of Beyoglu’s most popular restaurants, this place is particularly loved for its traditional Turkish breakfast with organic ingredients. Cheese, tomato, cucumber, bread, yogurt spread, porridge, olives and Van’s famous honey – washed down with plenty of strong tea.
Kaymakci Pando
This tiny dairy shop located on a shopping street in Besiktas has been serving the city’s best kaymak – a clotted cream made from buffalo milk – for over one century . Its owner, Pando Bey, also called Bulgar because of his Bulgarian origins, serves kaymak for breakfast along with cheese, omelettes, olives and tea.
Vogue
On the top floor of Besiktas Plaza, this fancy restaurant has an invaluable plus: a magnificent view on the Bosphorus. And they aso serve Sunday breakfast – an open buffet (from 10:30 till 16:00) with a selection of Turkish dishes and International breakfast alternatives.
AND FINALLY….
Mandabatmaz
In a few words, Istanbul’s best Turkish coffee. Unbelievably aromatic and thick as hot chocolate. Not to be missed.
