Guerrilla Gardening
New York City, 1973. An abandoned lot in the Bowery Houston area suddendly turns into a garden. That’s more or less how the history of Guerrilla Gardening began – as a form of “subversive”, non-violent and somehow political gardening.
The aim is quite clear: attracting public attention to urban decay, to the absence of green areas and to the greyness of some streets or neighborhoods. Thanks to its joyous and positive nature, Guerrilla Gardening spread all over the world, from the US to Italy and other European countries, catching on especially among the British, who are big gardening fans.
In London, Guerrilla Gardening recently evolved into Pothole Gardening. In other words, people are planting flowers and vegetables inside the many potholes that spoil the city’s streets – a brilliant and pleasant way to alert passers-by of their dangerous presence.
Surfing the Web, we accidentally bumped into Pothole Gardener and discovered his uniquely British flower creations, part art projects and part mission to highlight the bad conditions of London’s roads – everything sprinkled with a true love for plants and gardening. Check out his blog or take a look at his flickr photostream.
