Water retention, overweight, hypertension. We’ve been trained into thinking that salt is our greatest enemy; yet, its non-alimentary benefits are many and range from skin improvement to respiratory relief. Halotherapy (from the Greek term halos, meaning salt), takes advantage of these properties by recteating the microclimate of a natural salt cave; the rest is easy: just sit back, relax and breathe.

It all started in the salt mines of ancient Rome, where the miners with respiratory problems noticed the benefits that came from spending long hours in that environment. Speleotherapy is an ancient remedy, accurately tested in 1843 by a Polish doctor and throughout the twentieth century respiratory patients were often reccomended to bask inside the natural salt caves.

Lately, those same principles have been brought to the spas by recreating a very similar environment inside some hyper-modern rooms made of sea salt blocks where you can relax and breathe vaporized sodium chloride. Salt rooms promise to produce the same benefits of a three-day stay at the seaside in a single 30-minutes session.
