High definition
Remember the famous photograph of the Earth as seen from outer space taken in 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17? They called it Blue Marble, because the Earth appears like a blue glass marble perfectly illuminated by the sun behind the astronauts.
We just discovered via GreenMe that NASA has just taken a fresh picture, Blue Marble 2012, which is even more surprising because of its incredibly high definition. The space agency itself calls this awesome and unbelievably clear portrait of our planet “the most amazing high definition image of Earth“.
The composite image is made from data collected by an instrument called VIIRS travelling on the Suomi NPP satellite, which orbits the planet 14 times a day at an altitude of 512 miles. Not to be missed!
