Last-minute Christmas Markets

If the tree, the crib and the lights are not enough to plunge you into that joyful Christmas atmosphere; if you still need to buy some presents and are planning to go hunting for someting handicraft; if you you’re simply willing to escape the city’s greyness and give yourself to a fairy-tale world of snow, Christmas carrolls and tiny wooden huts, well… you’re still on time.

The Christmas markets cheering up most European cities will be open until Christmas day – but since there are only six days left, you’d better choose your closest destination. In fact, there’s no need to go far if what you’re looking for is a “slice” of traditional Christmas, your fair share of fragrant sweets and mulled wine and a handful of creative gifts.

The Chrismas markets in northern Italy’s Alto Adige are in no way inferior to the German ones. In Bolzano, Piazza Walther will host some 80 wooden huts selling everything from glass, wood and baked cly decorations to traditional local handicraft until December 23. Not to mention the Zelten, a typical Christmas fuity bread from Alto Adige.

In case you need more time, you might opt for  Merano, Bressanone, Brunico and Vipiteno, where the markets will stay open until January 6.

And if you’re inclined to go shopping abroad, then why not head to Munich, which is just a one-hour flight away from Milano? Besides being amazing, the Bavarian city’s Christmas markets will offer you the chance to try mulled wine – or gluhwein – in many different versions: simply spiced, with apple brandy (mit Schuss) or with a rum-soaked sugarloaf set on fire (the so-called Feuerzangbowle, which you can easily find at the Medieval market in Wittelsbacher Platz).

Apart from the classic Christmas market gadgets, abounding in central Marienplatz, you might also bump into some very interesting artistic and craftmade pieces, especially if you wander through Theresienwiese‘s huge market (partly indoor, which is quite a relief in these days of freezing cold weather!) and Münchener Freiheit‘s tiny artisan market in Schwabing.
Enjoy!
