Visiting a posthumous exhibition conceived by the featured artist herself is quite an unusual event, don’t you think? Well, that’s the case of Fondation Beyeler‘s retrospective of Louise Bourgeois‘s work in Basel.

The French-American artist – well-known for her abstract and yet autobiographical and deeply human paintings and sculptures – died in 2010 aged 98, and continued working with great clearness of mind until the last days of her life

The exhibition, planned by the artist herself, celebrates the centennial of her birth with a selection of twenty works including sculptures from every decade of her career and more recent works which have never before been on public view.

Yet, the greatest sight is undoubtedly Maman, a 30ft high bronze spider which, as well as being Bourgeois’ most iconic sculpture, alludes to one of her most beloved themes: the mother, representing strength, nurture, and protection.

After touring Switzerland’s main cities, Maman is currently on view in the Fondation Beyeler’s garden.
