Sky on the water
The only lights that shine in the night sky above New York City are those of the skyscrapers. Cause if there’s something that the Big Apple is missing, well… that’a a proper starry night sky. Unromantic as it might sound, the reason for this lack is air and light pollution…
To raise awareness about this fact – and to offer the New Yorkers teh chance to wish upon a star – The Windmill Factory art collective, created Reflecting the Stars, an installation of 201 solar powered LED lights recreating the night sky on the water while sparkling in the river.
For a location, they chose the decaying posts of Pier 49 in the Hudson River at Bank Street in Manhattan, where visitors on shore can press buttons which highlight constellations within the lights. Because losing our view of the universe might mean losing our place in the world, our perspective of being part of a solar system.
Until Oct. 25, daily from sunset to midnight.
