The new faces of Russia
The Russian art world shows its brand new face in Turin, where the freshest and most remarkable artistic expressions of a nation that only recently appeared on the International scene are on display.
After the great upsettings of the Nineties, when most artists considered art as a tool for actively changing reality – through scandal and provocation – today the Russian art scene is undergoing a more reflective phase, focusing on the work of art itself and reassessing the legacy of Modernism.
It is not by chance, then, that the title of the exhibition, ‘Moderinkon’, seems to have a triple significance, mixing modernity, Modernism and the most ancient form of art in Russia, the icon. Modernikon features twenty young artists – some well-known and some up-and-coming – observing a world that’s suspended between past and future. Using different forms
of expression – from painting to sculpture, from video art to photography and installations – these artists create a series of self-reflective images either totally detached from reality or renovating old images and languages with fresh energy and materiality.
Until February 27, 2011.
