The portrait of elegance
Nearly one century of history – from the depiction of life in the time of the Third Reich to the protagonists of European culture, not to mention her work as a news photographer for Life and other publications.
We’re talking about Gisele Freund, one of the most significant names in the history of photography, who died in 2000 at the age of 91. Virginia Woolf, André Malraux, and André Gide are just a few of the personalities she had the chance to portait after fleeing from nazi Germany to Paris in 1933.
Her elegant portraits are the
emblem of an era, and her work for Life an example of photojournalistic avant-gardism in a time when color photography was still a novelty.
And Paris is honouring Freund with a major exhibition right in these days, presenting her whole work through over 100 reproductions and a lot of interesting archive materials. Not to be missed.
Paris, Fondation Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent, until January 29, 2012
