Take an Academy-Award winning film director, a legendary rock band and its most reluctant component.
This is more or less the idea behind Living in the Material World, a documentary by Martin Scorsese focusing on the life of Beatles guitarists George Harrison.
Using rare and never before seen footage from George Harrison’s childhood, throughout his years as a Beatle, through the ups and downs of his solo career, and through the joys and pain of his private life, Martin Scorsese traces the arc of George’s journey from his birth in 1943 to his passing in 2001.
Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, and Olivia and Dhani Harrison (George’s widow), among many others, talk openly about George’s many gifts and contradictions and cast new light on the personality of the most spiritual and enigmatic Beatle.
Living in The Material World will be aired October 5 and 6 on HBO and later in the year on BBC. It will become available on DVD on October 10.
“George himself is no mystery. But the mystery inside George is immense”. John Lennon.
