Torino 29 (part 2)
It’s a real pleasure to visit Turing during the TFF: we saw people of every age crowd the theatres, we overindulged in delicious Piedmont chocolate and, above all, we attended a top-quality film festival.
This year, the festival opened with some illustrious guests, such as Penelope Cruz and the event’s hostess, Italian actress Laura Morante, and a little controversy. Following Aki Kaurismaki‘s no-show at the Gran Torino award ceremony – the Finnish director said to the press that he was unwilling to receive the award from the hands of a “mannequin” – Italian actor and director Sergio Castellitto, who’s currently filmimg a movie with the Spanish actress in Turin, responded with outrage.
Coming to the most relevant aspects, this year the festival scored an increase of 7% in the number of spectators. As for the movies, we particularly appreciated Werner Herzog’s latest work, a cold and plain account on death penalty, and Mathieu Amalric‘s adaptation of Corneille’s Illusion Comique.
Joe Cornish’s Attack the block, the story of a teen gang in South London defending their block from an alien invasion, has been a funny little surprise.
While crowiding the theatres for Robert Altman‘s retrospective, featuring masterpieces such as Nashville and M.A.S.H, the Italian public also appreciated the films of Japanese director Sion Sono.
Sion Siono’s work has been labeled as “horror” and compared to that of Quentin Tarantino; yet, we came to the conclusion that his harsh and visionary kind of cinema is definitely one of a kind.
See you next week for a sum up of the festival and the winners!
