Font designs, magazines, poster illustrations and logos. In Switzerland, type design has been a high art form for generations; today, digital technology has deeply disrupted what once was a small world of designers and craftsmen, and young Swiss designers confront this long tradition with irreverence, humor and boldy creative strokes using digital and traditional design tools.
‘Types We Can Make’ at MIT Museum’s Compton Gallery graphically examines the ways in which the field of typography has been radically transformed through the variety of media available today. Curated by Lausanne design school, ECAL, the exhibition presents a selection of modern Swiss typography, featuring world-class contributors who work internationally – professors, students and practicing graphic designers – in a unique showcase of new work and new ideas.
‘Swiss excellence in graphic design still has many bright days ahead of it’, explains ECAL Director Pierre Keller. ‘You can be sure that Swiss typography will continue to be spelled out in capital letters’.\u2028Until February 25, 2011.
