From 16th November to 23rd December, the exhibition titled “The Tea Ceremony in Edo” will be on display at Nezu Museum. This exhibition celebrates the tricentennial of Kawakami Fuhaku’s birth.
Fuhaku was the second son of a vassal of the Mizuno family, who ruled the Kishū domain. He was a disciple of Joshinsai Ten’nen Sōsa, the 7th headmaster of the Omotesenke school of tea ceremony, who served as instructor in the Way of Tea to the Kishū Tokugawa family. Fuhaku would go on to disseminate the Senke style of tea ceremony in Edo and establish the Fuhaku style.
The exhibition covers a number of topics, from his education under the tutelage of Joshinsai and his exquisite taste in teaware, to his relationship with the craftsmen who made the teaware and the feudal lords to whom he taught, displaying writings
