A French novel published in 1833, one of the author's most famous works, narrates the life of Eugénie. The novel is divided between her father's greed and unquestionable financial skills, the pain caused by the premature death of her mother, and a love that ends in great disappointment. It is a realistic snapshot of how money and power can damage human relationships and how wealth, if unaccompanied by sincere feelings and an untroubled life, does not ensure happiness.
