Two-thirds of the 5,600 square meter area is underground to disturb the landscape with as little structural concrete as possible and make the rest of the space available for the projects of the Danish landscaping firms Cornelius+Vöge and MASU Planning, which have enriched the park with magical labyrinths.
The museum tour also includes a delightful yellow house in Munkemøllestræde, where little Hans Christian lived with his parents until the age of 14.
The museum is full of surprises, just like the works of the writer to whom it is dedicated: spectacular creations created in collaboration with twelve artists of national and international renown, who together have created an interdisciplinary itinerary in which architecture, art, design, sound, light and images come together for a truly sensorial experience. An example? The roof features a pond with a transparent bottom: people passing by on the floor below can sit on the 'rocks' and look at the sky through the water, just like the Little Mermaid would have done.
Other contributors include Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira, British puppeteer Andy Gent, award-winning Danish author Kim Fupz and American Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket.
In short, to use the official claim: the museum does not talk about HC Andersen, it speaks as he speaks to us.
