1800, a century of great historical-political changes, of artistic developments from Romanticism to Post-Impressionism, of great European literature.
Today we present you three masterpieces of the century, which you can download for free in their full version, thanks to our collaboration with LiberLiber and Project Gutenberg. Happy reading!
THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY – OSCAR WILDE
A novel set in 19th century Victorian London, bourgeois and dedicated to pursuing the pleasures of life in all their opulence and vacuity. Dorian Gray represents the reflection of society on man: the handsome and innocent young man at the beginning of the novel becomes increasingly narcissistic and bound to his own image and youth, unable to resist the fascination of a foolish life.
What if everything that happens to the handsome Dorian doesn't become reflected by his appearance, but by a painting of him? A literary masterpiece and a historical mirror of immeasurable importance.
THE CHILD OF PLEASURE – GABRIELE D'ANNUNZIO
Another pillar of late-nineteenth-century literature, starring another European capital as the protagonist: Rome. The Child of Pleasure tells the story of Andrea Sperelli, a young Roman aristocrat, and his love affair with Elena Muti. Passion, ardour, a real idyll unites the two protagonists at the beginning of their relationship, until the day of their separation. From that moment, Andrea lets himself go and starts to pursue empty pleasure, to conquer noblewomen for the sake of the challenge, to gradually drain his soul of any feeling.
LES MISÉRABLES – VICTOR HUGO
One of the most excellent historical novels of the century, among the most read and studied all over the world. In complete antithesis with the two previous novels, the work is dedicated to the characters of the lowest social ranks, the so-called "wretched" of France at the beginning of the 19th century. An attempt at redemption for their condition, a historical cross-section of great socio-political relevance. A book that is certainly not easy to read, but enriching and that deserves to be read at least once in a lifetime.
