A Shearling In Disguise

A Shearling In Disguise

The legendary shearling coat, an icon of the 1970s, is back in Montedoro’s contemporary and minimalist version. Yet its best qualities - warmth and sturdiness – are still perfectly intact

T

here was a time when the shearling coat, a.k.a. sheepskin, use to be standard: everyone owned one, to be worn in full winter when the wool overcoat was not enough anymore to keep them from shivering from the cold. And then suddenly it was gone and nowhere to be seen. What happened to that warm, sturdy and indestructible reverse sheepskin coat? How did it go from being the icon jacket of a generation, immortalized in so many images from the 1970s and 1980s, to becoming a rarity?
Yet as it always happens with fashion, sooner or later the shearling was bound to re-emerge, and that is exactly what it did, resurfacing a few years ago in perfect shape. Out of its many revamped variations, the everlasting, practical leather jacket with a warm and soft shaved fur lining is probably the most versatile. This season, Montedoro proposes it in a sleek and sophisticated version: an essential black shearling zipped bomber jacket.

Although very understated compared to the traditional shearling jacket, the Montedoro version retains some of the features that have contributed to making it popular back in the days: it is soft, warm, extremely sturdy and it tends to soften with use, adapting to and changing with the wearer. Furthermore, thanks to the highly selected raw materials and a series of advanced treatments, the Montedoro shearling jacket is also incredibly thin and lightweight.
At first glance, it might look like a leather jacket. But just try it on and you’ll see what we mean when we say that it does have a very noble soul.
