An 800-square-meter complex of indoor and outdoor pools, surrounded by 8,000 square meters of parkland. The rehabilitation of the old De Montel Stables represents a milestone in Milan's urban regeneration scheme.
The knights of the Savoy cavalry also came here for riding, galloping from the modern-day thoroughfare of Via Vincenzo Monti. Built between 1915 and 1918 by the noble Jewish banker Giuseppe De Montel, the stables are a prime example of the blend of Milanese Art Nouveau style with that of its French counterpart as found in the stables of the Duke of Condé in Chantilly. Designed by the Milanese architect Vietti Violi, the complex was unfortunately abandoned during the dark times of fascism and racial laws that forced De Montel to sell the structure. Thus, passing through various hands, in the 1980s it fell into a state of complete abandonment.
The historic De Montel Stables, nestled in the San Siro district, just across from the Meazza stadium, have regained new splendor thanks to an ambitious urban regeneration project that has transformed them into the Teatro delle Terme ("Spa Theatre"). Recently inaugurated, it is a sophisticated spa complex that represents an extraordinary fusion of past and future, combining the elegance of Art Nouveau architecture with innovative and sustainable solutions.
The rehabilitation project, led by Studio Marzorati Architettura, was able to enhance the architecture of the stables, integrating it with cutting-edge technologies. Extracted from a depth of 290 meters, Its sulfurous thermal waters are used to create an oasis of well-being. This spa, powered by renewable energy and connected to the district heating network, is a model for environmental sustainability, with zero CO2 emissions.
The spa complex extends over 800 square meters of indoor and outdoor pools and can accommodate up to 600 people. Guests can immerse themselves in an environment that combines history and innovation, surrounded by an 8,000-square-meter urban park. Graced with saunas, swimming pools, and relaxation areas, the park offers a unique experience that blends the elegance of the past with contemporary comfort. Every architectural detail of the old stables has been preserved, providing an immersive wellness experience.
The spa's inauguration represents a milestone in Milan's urban regeneration scheme. This project not only restores a significant piece of the city's history but also enriches the metropolis' tourism and wellness offerings. The rebirth of the De Montel Stables is a testament to how a vision and care for historical heritage can create new opportunities, endowing Milan with a stunning new jewel of style and relaxation.
The spa complex offers a wide range of sensory experiences. Both the indoor and outdoor thermal baths are equipped with whirlpools, cervical waterfalls, and a pool with a high percentage of mineral salts that allows you to float, providing a deep sense of relaxation. The saunas, including a panoramic sauna and a Brechel bath, create an atmosphere of total relaxation.
The relaxation areas have been designed to provide comfort and serenity. The sensation rooms, such as the Temple for Meditation and the Imaginary Forest with its hanging nests, are enhanced by soft lighting and soothing sounds. The in-house restaurant serves zero-kilometer food grown in the complex's vegetable garden, combining the pleasures of dining with a philosophy of holistic well-being.
The architectural solutions adopted for the Teatro delle Terme reflect a biophilic approach, integrating nature into the constructed environment. The internal courtyard is a lush garden that extends into green indoor environments, creating a continuous landscape that encourages relaxation. With its grassy steps and thermal baths, the outdoor amphitheater is a place for meditation and contemplation, where architecture and nature unite in perfect harmony.
The complex can be accessed from the nearby metro stops, pedestrian walkways, and bike paths. For those arriving by car, underground parking is available. Furthermore, an area along Via Fetonte is dedicated to green services, with electric bike and car-sharing stations, and charging stations for electric vehicles.
The Teatro delle Terme is not just a wellness center, but a place for meeting and socializing, where people of all ages can enjoy unique experiences, regenerating body and mind. This project is a beacon of innovation and sustainability, a virtuous example of urban regeneration.
